Key Challenges of Getting New Combination Products to Market: Insights From 40 Years of Device Development

Thu, Oct 29 | 02:30 PM - 02:45 PM
Independence

Session details:

Development of drug delivery devices and combination products entails risk, with industry sources suggesting success rates of 10-20%. Availability of published data on where device development programmes fail and why is limited, however. All projects are different, but common themes do recur.

This presentation analyses 100 device development programmes carried out over 40 years. It presents data on the stages at which developments are halted from proof of concept through to detailed design, verification, validation, clinical evaluation and commercialisation, together with the broad reasons why.

The presentation also explores the challenges faced during these different phases of development including proving core technologies, managing uncertainty, and achieving effective scale-up, and discusses approaches to tackling them.

Attendees will gain insight into typical drug delivery device development challenges experienced by others though rarely discussed, along with suggestions on how to avoid or mitigate such challenges.
